Some Personal News and a New Look for Engage Northbrook
After considerable thought, and many conversations with my wife, our boys, friends, and neighbors, I've decided to run as an Independent candidate for Northbrook Village Trustee in April 2027.
It was not an easy decision. I have deep respect for those who serve on the Village Board, and I understand the responsibility they accept. We've all seen how local campaigns can become needlessly personal and divisive. I have no interest in contributing to that.
I started Engage Northbrook in February 2025 because I wanted to better understand the issues facing our Village and how decisions were being made. What followed has involved a great deal of reading, research, writing, and, most enjoyably, conversations with residents whose experiences and perspectives are often quite different from my own.
Those conversations have helped me appreciate the difficulty of governing a community where people care deeply about the place they call home but don't necessarily agree about its future. I've developed greater respect for the challenges facing those who serve, even as I've become more convinced that the relationship between residents and Village leadership needs attention. Trust is difficult to build, easily lost, and not restored by assurances alone.
My wife and I have raised our family in Northbrook, made lifelong friends here, and benefited from the work of generations of residents who helped make this such a good place to live. We intend to spend the rest of our lives here. That gives us a personal stake in the choices being made today, although no greater claim to being heard than anyone else who calls Northbrook home.
What makes Northbrook special has been built over generations, but we can't take our future here for granted. How thoughtfully we adapt to changing circumstances will help determine the community we leave to those who follow us. Important decisions lie ahead, and I believe we can approach them with greater openness, more meaningful engagement, clearer priorities, and a willingness to measure our success by results rather than intentions.
I don't assume my views are always right. Nor do I assume that someone who disagrees hasn't been listening. Reasonable people can examine the same facts and reach different conclusions. What I hope we can do is spend more time understanding the problems before us, less time questioning motives, and work toward decisions that serve the community as a whole.
Two Websites, Two Different Purposes
I intend to continue publishing Engage Northbrook separately from my campaign.
From the beginning, I've tried to approach each subject by doing the research, establishing the facts, considering competing perspectives, and giving readers enough information to draw their own conclusions. When I offer an opinion, I try to make clear where the facts end and my judgment begins. That approach has not always produced conclusions everyone agrees with, nor should it.
I'll keep examining Village decisions, asking questions, and following issues wherever the available evidence leads. Becoming a candidate shouldn't diminish those standards, although I recognize that it may change how some readers interpret what I write. For that reason, future Engage Northbrook articles will include a disclosure of my candidacy.
My campaign will have its own home at tedfornorthbrook.com, where I've shared some background about myself, why I'm running, and how I would approach serving on the Village Board. For now, my attention is on gathering the signatures necessary to qualify for the ballot. As the campaign progresses, I'll expand the site to include more detailed positions on Village issues, campaign updates, and opportunities to get involved. I'll keep that material separate from Engage Northbrook.
A New Look for Engage Northbrook
Regular readers may also have noticed a change in the website itself. I've moved Engage Northbrook to a new platform and updated the design, primarily to make articles easier to read and the archives easier to navigate.
All previous articles remain available, and links to them should continue to work. I expect to keep writing when I find a subject that deserves closer examination.
The look has changed, but the purpose has not.
Thanks for Reading
I appreciate those of you who have read Engage Northbrook, shared information, challenged a conclusion, or pointed out an error. The disagreements have often been as useful as the encouragement, and I hope both continue.
