A More Engaged Northbrook is a Better Northbrook.
Our purpose

A More Engaged Northbrook is a Better Northbrook.

Engage Northbrook started in early 2025 with a straightforward observation: for a community that cares deeply about its future, remarkably few Northbrook residents were participating in local elections.

Decisions about development, taxation, infrastructure, public services, and the future of our downtown affect all of us. But too often, those decisions are made with limited resident involvement.

Engage Northbrook was created to encourage greater participation, better-informed conversations, and more accountability from the institutions responsible for governing our Village.

Where it began: local elections

Municipal voter turnout illustrates the challenge. In 2015, fewer than 4% of registered voters participated. Even in 2023, just 10.96% voted. Turnout grew to 29.5% in the April 2025 Village election—8,325 ballots cast among 28,271 registered voters—an encouraging improvement, but still with most registered voters not participating.

What Engage Northbrook has become

What began as an effort to raise awareness about municipal elections has grown into a place for substantive examination of Village governance. Recent writing has focused on downtown redevelopment, Meadow Plaza, the zoning code rewrite, the planned unit development process, and how Northbrook makes consequential decisions.

The goal is not to manufacture agreement. It is to give residents enough context to understand the issues, challenge assumptions, and form their own opinions.

Our approach

We believe better outcomes begin with clear facts, transparent processes, informed debate, and meaningful opportunities for residents to participate. We can expect high standards from Village leadership while also recognizing that difficult problems rarely have simple solutions.

Engage Northbrook is an independent civic publication. It is not the official voice of the Village of Northbrook, a Village Board campaign, or any political organization.
